Where Do You Live?

Car auctions are great ways to purchase cars at deep discount. Anything from older, junk fixer uppers to great newer cars even to expensive luxury models can be found. Many people purchase cars this way from car auctions either for themselves or to sell at a profit. This pleasant experience, however, can quickly turn sour if you don’t know a few things.

One possible problem is that the purchase might not be a good one.  There are lemons at auctions too.  The rule of the auction jungle is “as is”.  Even children have been taught about “as is” through a television cartoon showing a guy buying a used car”.  He makes a cursory look at the car, but every question is met with “the car is as is” from the salesman.  Once the sale is made and the man tries to enter the car, it shakes itself apart.  The unfortunate buyer shouts “I want the car as was!”  Don’t let that happen to you.

Reputable car auctions give buyers ample opportunities to check out the cars before bidding or purchase.  If an auction won’t do that, run.  Spend time at the facility before the auction begins.  Inspect and take a spin in the interesting autos.  If you don’t know anything about cars, bring someone who does.  If not, then during the test drive bring the car to a mechanic for inspection.  A good mechanic can provide a thorough inspection in a short time.  Check other elements for damage.  This includes the body, upholstery, and bumpers.

Another problem is inherent in auctions. People assume that the car auction price will be a great deal, but often it ends up being more expensive than purchasing the item through a normal sales process. That holds true for car auctions too.  The bidding can easily escalate to well over the car’s value.  Add the fees often associated with the auction and it means great care must be taken to know the real value of a car.  Easily accessible date on car values is standard issue for auction buyers.  No need to even look it up in advance since the information is online and phones can access it.  Don’t pay more than the car is worth, even if it’s a coveted antique.

It’s not hard to find bargains at auctions.  But keep your eyes and ears open.  If a deal appears too good to be true, it is, even at car auctions.
