Every motorist knows that car gearbox repairs have the potential to be one of the most expensive maintenance jobs their car will ever require. Therefore nobody can blame cash-strapped motorists for breaking out in a cold sweat at the first sign of gearbox problems. The economic downturn has lead to a sharp upturn in DIY jobs, on cars as much as on homes, but it isn’t recommended to carry out DIY car gearbox repairs.
Uncomplicated jobs such as changing wheels can easily be done at home with a little bit of common sense. But other jobs are much more intricate. Car gearbox repairs are, unfortunately, one such complex job. Gearboxes are very complicated pieces of kit and ordinary motorists are probably not going to be able to identify the problem correctly. And there’s no way of fixing the problem if they can’t even identify it!
It might seem that poking and prodding the gearbox to identify the problem would be the right place to start. But because so few drivers truly understand the workings of a gearbox they’re more than likely going to make the problem worse. The motorist’s wallet, as well as the car’s value and safety will suffer if the problem is worsened. It’s important to remember that cars with gearbox problems are nearly impossible to sell.
Unless the car owner is a qualified mechanic then DIY simply isn’t safe. Even amongst professional mechanics, some know more about car gearbox repairs than others. It is always best to have the gearbox problem checked over by an expert. Motorists will feel they have more important things to be spending their cash on than car gearbox repairs, but they could save money by buying a reconditioned gearbox, and they’ll have peace of mind.
